Do I need training?
It is a legal requirement that all types of trucks require formal training the amount of days required will vary depending on experience and trainee ratio (maximum 3)
Once I complete training can I operate any forklift?
Because a person can operate a counterbalance B1 up to 5 tonne this does not mean that they are covered to use an 8 tonne counterbalance this would require a B2 certificate which would require a 1 day conversion. Depending on the type of truck certificate the operator holds some times it is possible to convert from one type of truck to another reducing the time required to train compared to if they were a basic operator all types of truck require a different certificate
If I pass my test on a diesel counterbalance truck does this mean I can operate diesel only?
No the only difference is how it is propelled this could be gas, electric or diesel. operators who use gas trucks should be trained how to change gas bottles.
When refuelling gas bottles this should only be done if you have been trained and certificated.
Can I use the truck on the side of the road to load and unload Lorries?
Providing you have a truck licence for the truck you are using and a car licence if the truck you are using exceeds 3.5 tonnes, but not 7.5 tonnes than a category C1 licence
Is needed
How often do I need to refresh/retest my certificates?
For further information regarding refresh/retest ref to itssar.org.uk in their news section.
Can training be completed on our company premises?
Yes. On-site training is a good idea; it gives operators practice in the working environment. Although sometimes this is not always practical either because of lack of room or lack of facilities.
Can training be completed on our company premises if we do not have room or facilites to do a national certificate?
Some companies only require cover for the job that the operator does on his/her site this could be done as specific job which would cover the operator for the job that they do including any attachments they may use on your company premises only. This training would still incorporate the three stages of testing theory,pre-shift check and practical test
